Clinical Observation of Juvenile Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Clinical data of 8 children with juvenile diabetes mellitus who were admitted to the national medical center from Jan. 1965 to Feb. 1983 were analyzed. The mean at onset was 10 10/12 years, male to female ratio was 1 : 1 and there was consid-erable seasonal variation with peaks in autumn and winter. In 1 cases (12.5%), maturity onset diabetes was noted in family history.
Polyuria and polydipsia were noted in all cases as initial symptoms, and the diag-nosis of diabetes was established within 5 weeks after onset of initial symptoms.
Among 3 episodes of ketoacidosis, 2 episodes occurred with onset of disease and 1 case, with carbuncle after discontinuance of insulin therapy. Children with ketoac-idosis showed mean blood glucose level of 721 mg/dl, mean serum osmolarity 302 m 0sm/l, mean arterial blood pH of 7.12 and HC03- 9.0mEq/l, tachycardia, tac-hypnea, and hemoconcentration.
The mean duration of 1st admission was 28 days, at discharge, the mean fasting blood sugar level was 148 mg/dl, and average dosage of insulin was 1.3?/kg/day.
During follow up after discharge, honeymoon phase was noted in 1 case and deve-loped pulmonary tuberculosis in 1 case.
